GLORIA HIRSCH VOLUNTEER FOR SEVERAL GROUPS: Newspaper Obituary and Death Notice

St. Louis Post-Dispatch (MO) - Monday, March 25, 2002

Deceased Name: GLORIA HIRSCH VOLUNTEER FOR SEVERAL GROUPS

Gloria Hirsch, who chaired a bike-a-thon for the St. Louis chapter of the American Diabetes Association for 30 years, died Sunday (March 24, 2002) at Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis. Mrs. Hirsch, 73, of Clayton, had been battling cancer.

Mrs. Hirsch had been a volunteer for most of her adult life. She volunteered for the American Diabetes Association for 40 years, starting in the 1960s, when her son was diagnosed with juvenile diabetes. The association honored her at a dinner in November and named a summer camp for children with diabetes for her.

Over the years, the bike-a-thon Mrs. Hirsch helped organize raised more than $2 million for the summer camp in Eureka.

Mrs. Hirsch also promoted the St. Louis Jewish Book Festival for two decades.

In 1988, she helped found the St. Louis Women's Interfaith Conference, a project for which she received the first Temple Israel Malachi Award in 1989.

Mrs. Hirsch also received an award for public service from Habitat for Humanity in 1997, and a National Jefferson Award for public service in 1995. She also received awards from the United Way.

In 1981, the St. Louis Globe-Democrat named Mrs. Hirsch a Woman of Achievement.

The eternal light in the sanctuary of Congregation Shaare Emeth in Creve Coeur was named after Mrs. Hirsch in 1978 in recognition of her efforts to raise funds for the sanctuary.

Mrs. Hirsch and her husband, Edward Hirsch, founded Hirsch Communications, an advertising and public relations firm, in the 1980s.

In addition to her husband, Mrs. Hirsch is survived by two sons, Dr. Irl B. Hirsch, of Bellevue, Wash., and James S. Hirsch, of Needham, Mass.; a daughter, Lynn Friedman, of Chesterfield; five grandchildren; a sister, Beverly Kaufer of University City; and a brother, Dr. Robert Simon of Clayton.

Visitation will begin at 12:45 p.m. Tuesday at Congregation Shaare Emeth in Clayton, followed by a funeral service at 1:30 p.m. Interment will be at B'Nai Amoona Cemetery.

Memorial contributions can be made to the Gloria Hirsch Foundation of the American Diabetes Association, 10820 Sunset Office Drive, St. Louis, Mo. 63127, or to Congregation Shaare Emeth.
